Product Description
The SZGH-36 Y axis is a side-4 turning-milling compound CNC machine built on the SZGH-36 slant bed lathe platform. Four live power heads are mounted on the Y axis side, adding a 140mm Y-axis travel with ER16 toolholders to the standard 2-axis turning configuration. This allows the machine to complete turning, drilling, tapping, milling, and side slotting on a single workpiece in one clamping — eliminating the need to transfer parts to a separate machining center for secondary operations. It is suited for batch production of bar stock up to 35mm diameter and disk blanks up to Ø100mm requiring side-face or end-face features.

The single most important capability of the SZGH-36 Y axis is the ability to complete turning and side-face milling operations on the same part without removing it from the chuck. In conventional production, a turned shaft requiring a cross-drilled hole, a milled flat, or a side-tapped thread must be taken off the lathe, fixtured on a machining center or drill press, and re-clamped for the secondary operation. Each re-clamping introduces a positioning error — typically 0.02mm to 0.08mm in a manual fixture — and consumes operator time for setup and inspection.
On the SZGH-36 Y axis, the turning cycle and the side milling/drilling cycle run sequentially in a single program. The workpiece never leaves the chuck between operations. Concentricity between turned diameters and drilled holes is defined only by the machine's own axis accuracy (±0.01mm), not by the quality of a secondary fixture setup. For parts like hydraulic valve bodies, lock bolts with cross-drilled locking holes, or connector housings with side-entry ports, this is the difference between a two-machine, two-operator process and a one-machine, one-operator process.
The Y-axis assembly on the SZGH-36 Y axis carries 4 side-mounted live power heads with ER16 toolholders. ER16 collets accommodate tool shanks from 1mm to 10mm diameter, covering the full range of drills, end mills, and taps used in small-to-medium precision parts. The 140mm Y-axis travel is sufficient for cross-drilling, slotting, and face milling on parts up to the machine's maximum workpiece diameter. Power head speed reaches 2,500rpm standard (4,000rpm max), suitable for drilling in aluminum and brass at optimal cutting speeds and for reduced-speed tapping in stainless steel.
The maximum drill diameter supported is Ø20mm — covering most cross-hole and through-hole features on parts within the 35mm bar capacity range.
The machine's total tooling configuration is described as "6 rows of cutters + 4 side milling." The 6 turning tool positions in the standard turret handle all turning, facing, grooving, and threading operations. The 4 Y-axis power heads run milling, drilling, and tapping operations on the side face. In a typical complex part program, the controller transitions seamlessly between the turning spindle and the live tooling spindle — the operator programs a single NC file that encompasses both phases without a machine pause or re-clamping event.
Because the SZGH-36 Y axis combines what would otherwise be two separate machine operations into one, the staffing model changes significantly. A factory running a dedicated lathe plus a dedicated drill press or milling machine for secondary operations needs at minimum two operators for that production cell. The SZGH-36 Y axis collapses the cell to one machine and, with automatic bar feeder integration, one operator overseeing multiple units. Customers in the hydraulic fittings and automotive fastener segments report labor-per-part reductions of 40–60% after transitioning to compound turning.
The SZGH-36 Y axis shares its entire base machine architecture with the SZGH-36J: the same 1,800kg anti-deformation cast base, the same 4kW spindle with Harbin 7015/7013 angular contact bearings, the same H-class linear guide rails, and the same SZGH control system. The Y-axis assembly is an engineered addition to this proven platform, not a separate machine design. This means customers already familiar with the SZGH-36J will find the programming model, maintenance procedures, and spare parts catalog largely identical — reducing training and support overhead when adding compound turning capability to an existing SZGH fleet.
The SZGH-36 Y axis is suited for any part that requires turning plus at least one of the following: cross-drilling, side tapping, side milling, slotting, or side-face engraving — on bar stock up to 35mm diameter or disk blanks up to Ø100mm.
Valve bodies with cross-drilled ports, manifold blocks, fitting bodies with side-entry threads, cylinder end caps with porting features — the defining application for Y-axis compound lathes. A hydraulic cartridge valve body that previously required lathe + machining center is completed on the SZGH-36 Y axis in a single setup.
Hex bolts with cross-drilled locking holes, castle nuts, clevis pins with cotter pin holes, brake caliper anchor bolts — high-volume automotive hardware where secondary drilling operations must be concentric and perpendicular to the turned OD within tight tolerances.
Circular connector bodies requiring side-entry cable ports, terminal housings with mounting slot features, aluminum standoffs with cross-threaded inserts — electronics industry parts that combine turned OD accuracy with milled features.
Bone screw blanks requiring drive-feature slots, implant bodies with side-entry locking holes, dental abutment components — medical parts where the concentricity tolerance between turned and drilled features is critical and manual re-fixturing is not acceptable.
Any shop taking on complex small-batch parts with combined turning and milling features — the SZGH-36 Y axis compresses multi-operation job routing into a single machine setup, reducing lead time and work-in-process queue.

The SZGH-36J is a standard 2-axis turning machine. The SZGH-36 Y axis adds a Y-axis assembly with 4 live side power heads (ER16, up to 4,000rpm, 140mm travel) to the identical base machine. This allows drilling, tapping, milling, and slotting on the side face of a workpiece in the same program, without re-clamping. Choose the SZGH-36 Y axis when your parts have side-face features — cross holes, side threads, milled flats, or slots.
The 4 side-mounted ER16 power heads can perform cross-drilling (up to Ø20mm), tapping (standard thread sizes within ER16 tool capacity), side milling (flat milling, slot milling, pocket milling), and side-face engraving. Radial and axial drilling relative to the workpiece centerline are both supported within the 140mm Y-axis travel range.
Yes, measurably. When a turned part is removed from the lathe and re-fixtured on a machining center or drill press for secondary operations, the positional accuracy of the secondary feature relative to the turned diameter is limited by the quality of the fixture — typically ±0.02mm to ±0.08mm in a well-maintained fixture. On the SZGH-36 Y axis, the part stays in the chuck throughout. The positional relationship between the turned OD and the drilled hole is controlled by the machine's axis accuracy: ±0.01mm. For applications with concentricity tolerances tighter than 0.05mm, single-clamping is not optional — it is the only reliable method.
The standard toolholder is ER16 collet chuck, which accommodates tool shanks from 1mm to 10mm. ER16 is a globally standardized collet system with wide tool availability from all major cutting tool brands (Sandvik, Kennametal, Sumitomo, Walter, YG-1, and domestic equivalents). Standard ER16 collets and tool holders are readily available through local distributors worldwide.
The current configuration is a side-4 power head setup, meaning the live tooling operates radially on the side face of the workpiece. For end-face drilling or milling (axial operations), SZGHTECH offers the SZGH-46 Y axis with a 4+4 configuration (4 end-face + 4 side-face power heads). Customers requiring both radial and axial live tooling are recommended to consider the SZGH-46 Y axis.
The SZGH controller handles both the turning spindle (C-axis or main spindle) and the live tooling spindle within a single NC program using standard M-code activation for spindle switching and G-code positioning for Y-axis moves. SZGHTECH provides application-specific sample programs for common workpiece types (cross-drilled bolts, ported valve bodies, slotted connector housings) and offers remote programming support during machine commissioning.
Production lead time is 20–35 working days from receipt of deposit. There is no minimum order quantity — single-machine orders are standard for export customers. One 20-foot shipping container fits 2–3 units. Contact SZGHTECH at export02@szghtech.com for an FOB Shenzhen quotation.
A conventional production cell for parts requiring turning + side drilling uses two machines and two operators (or one operator splitting time, which cuts throughput). The SZGH-36 Y axis consolidates both operations into one machine. With automatic bar feeder integration, one operator can supervise 3–4 SZGH-36 Y axis units simultaneously. Customers in the hydraulic fittings sector typically report a 40–60% reduction in operator hours per 1,000 parts compared to a separate lathe + drill press workflow.
The SZGH-36 Y axis compound machine is in production use at:
